The National Outlook results presented here are for the the most recent survey, conducted December 4 to December 10, 2006, with a sample size of 906 and a margin of error +/-3.3 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

The National Outlook Index (NOI) is made up of the two Indices, Economic Optimism and Presidential Leadership, plus four additional components - Quality of Life, Standing in the World, Direction of the Country, and Morals & Ethics.

The NOI fell by 2.7 points in December, going from 48.3 in November to 45.6 this month.

Only one of the six NOI components gained ground in December, albeit by a very small amount - 0.1 points for the Quality of Life index.

The rest of the NOI component indices showed losses this month:

--Standing in the world: -5.3 points
--Economic optimism: -2.2 points
--Presidential leadership: -1.0 points
--Direction of country: -7.6 points
--Morals & ethics: -0.2 points

The National Outlook Index Components include both the Economic Optimism and Presidential Leadership in addition to the 4 questions posed about the country's standing in terms of different issues. Respondents are asked about their quality of life today and their feelings about the U.S.'s standing in the world, as well as their views on the country's morals values.

For all indices, the higher the score, the more favorable the outlook. Responses to each question range from 0 to 100. Anything above a score of 50 gives a positive outlook while anything below 50, gives a negative one.
